“I, and my colleague bishops, so often get the question, where are the youth and young adults? Well here you are!”
ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton’s words rang through the Smoothie King Arena as 16,000 youth, young adults, and adult leaders gathered in New Orleans, Louisiana for the first ELCA Youth Gathering in over six years. Gathering under the theme “Created to Be”, the 2024 Gathering explored how we, as children of God, are Created to Be: Brave, Authentic, Free, Disruptive, and Disciples.
Before the majority of these 16,000 participants arrived in New Orleans, the Gathering held two pre-events: the Multicultural Youth Leadership Event (MYLE) and the tAble. MYLE is a three-day pre-event for youth of color or whose primary language is other than english. Similarly, the tAble is a three-day pre-event for youth who live with cognitive, physical, or emotional disabilities. These pre-events welcomed over 750 youth and adult leaders to celebrate the unique individuals God has created, and the joy of being wHoly ourselves.
If you have attended a Gathering in the past, or supported a young person who attended, you might recognize elements of this Gathering. Throughout each day, different groups rotated between a series of experiences, all while enjoying the dewy New Orleans heat.
Accompaniment - centered around three themes - advocacy, action, or awareness. Groups engaged in either a hands-on service project, learned from an organization doing important justice work, or engaged in advocacy alongside a nonprofit.
Interactive Learning - a space where partner organizations, nonprofits, schools, synods, camps, and more set-up booths to share about their ministry in hands-on, engaging ways.
Community Life - during the day, a large convention center hall set-up for participants to PLAY! In the evening, space in various hotels to engage in Q&As with mass gathering speakers, hear from local New Orleans bands, play board games and enjoy quiet time, or dance with friends!
Synod Day
- gathering with your fellow synod and region, participants engaged in a youth-led worship service to start their day. Afterwards, groups explored the French Quarter with the help of a Gathering made scavenger hunt! Lagniappe Stations along the way provided rest and air conditioning, as well as local music and storytellers, and a few fun Mardi Gras costumes to try on.
These daytime activities encouraged participants to connect deeply with their groups, other Gathering attendees, and the city and culture of New Orleans.
Youth attendee Chloe Pop shared her joyful surprise in the connectedness of Gathering attendees saying, “there was a feeling of togetherness that made it feel very unifying and joyful, and I loved it.”
Every night, participants gathered in the Smoothie King Arena (the Superdome was under construction) for a sold-out
Mass Gathering event. This over three-hour production was led by the House Band, youth and young adult Emcees, keynote speakers, guest musicians, dance troupe, and so much more. Each night centered around that day’s theme (Created to Be: Authentic, Brave, etc.) and brought storytelling, vulnerability, joy, and connection for the 16,000 in attendance.
Adult leader Nicole Oehmke shared that one of her Gathering highlights was hearing Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton preach on Saturday morning during Mass Gathering; “she preached to a literal stadium, but it felt cozy and real”.
While Gatherings include ample structured time for attendees, this year’s Gathering intentionally provided space for attendees to explore New Orleans on their own and connect with their group further. In fact, these moments were some of the favorites amongst St. John’s attendees.
Youth attendee Caroline Montiel shares that, “I experienced community and faith the most when we would go to restaurants together, debrief about our days, and share our highs and lows of the days.”
With an additional day following the Gathering to explore before returning to Sacramento, along with downtime throughout the day, the St. John’s group enjoyed an afternoon at the aquarium, a swamp tour in the bayou, and many traditional local cuisines.
“My highlight was the alligator boat ride, and I was surprised at how good the aquarium was,” shares youth attendee Ella Haug.
Youth attendee Nora Riddle also shares fond memories of the group’s time exploring the Garden District, writing, “I think my favorite moment was running through the garden district to see all the gorgeous houses (it really reminded me of
Princess and the Frog which made me so happy).”
As evident in last Sunday’s Beignets from the Bayou event in Oehler Hall, where attendees shared stories and pictures from their time in New Orleans, the time spent in close community wandering, exploring, and laughing with each other are cherished memories that made for a lasting trip.
