The leadership of St. John’s Lutheran Church is pleased to announce that Joel Barkel has accepted the position of Associate Director of Volunteer Management, beginning September 23, 2024. Joel has transitioned from his role as Property Staff at St. John’s and will begin living into this new role next week. Catherine Slabaugh, Gwynnae Byrd, and Kurt Galvez interviewed a pool of passionate, faith-driven individuals interested in this role, and after numerous interviews, the hiring committee offered this position to Joel. Many of us know Joel as the helpful staff member unlocking doors, unloading donations from our cars, or singing on Sunday mornings. However, Joel brings over a decade of professional and volunteer experience in the nonprofit and corporate sector to this new position. During his time in the Peace Corps, Joel served as the Regional Leader for a grassroots Malaria organization, overseeing 25 volunteers throughout the region leading various projects, showcasing dynamic volunteer management experience. While working with the Gates Institute, Joel developed content for the company website and mobile app, experience that will be essential as he becomes the staff liaison and implementer of Realm. And throughout the past three years here at St. John’s, Joel has nurtured countless intergenerational relationships with staff, lay leaders, and congregants that will be instrumental to this new role. As the Associate Director of Volunteer Management, Joel will help oversee: Volunteer Coordination and Tracking: help determine volunteer ministry priorities and needs, recruit and coordinate volunteers, and ensure all volunteers are trained, integrated, and thanked throughout their service Membership Database Management: serve as lead for Realm Database system and establish on-going processes and timelines for maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of church members Member Engagement and Connection: serve as a first point of contact for congregations seeking to become more engaged in the St. John’s community and facilitate connections between congregants and volunteer opportunities that align with their interests, skills, and availability Website Support: regularly update the St. John’s website with upcoming events, special programs, or campaigns The leadership of St. John’s is confident in this transition for Joel and believes he will exude the mission of Living God’s Love in the World in this new role. “I couldn't be more excited (or possibly a little nervous) to begin this new journey at St. John’s! I am eager to take on new roles and responsibilities, but most of all, I look forward to working alongside this wonderful congregation. My hope is that together, we will bring new energy and excitement to our church community. Whether it’s warmly welcoming new faces or diving into one of our many ministries, an engaged congregation will always be at the heart of St. John’s success. With your support, I believe we can do amazing things together,” writes Barkel. With this shift from Property Staff to Associate Director of Volunteer Management, the Property Staff at St. John’s will decrease. Matt Balara, Property Manager, and Julius Turner, Property Staff, will continue working diligently to set-up, clean, and maintain this historic property. We encourage you to always reach out to the Property Staff or Linda Baldwin directly if you have any property needs or concerns. As Joel lives into this new role in the coming weeks and months, we encourage you to reach out and share how you hope to further engage with the St. John’s community. Joel is looking forward to furthering the lay-led ministries active here at St. John’s and incorporating more congregants into this new season!
