Thousands of young people gathered in New Orleans to accept the challenge to be brave, free, authentic, disruptive and, ultimately, disciples of God. The 2024 ELCA Youth Gathering, “Created To Be,” drew to Smoothie King Center nearly 16,000 attendees during its July 13-16 run, including a group from St. John’s Lutheran Church.
There to help ensure that the work and worship done was amplified and shared was one of the leaders of St. John’s, drawing on her own faith, expertise and significant support from the church. It was a story that needed to be shared on many platforms for a national audience, and St. John’s communication director Catherine Slabaugh played a leading role in capturing and illustrating the young people’s four-day journey of discovery, community and faith.
Slabaugh, who became St. John’s communications director in May 2023 and in August 2024 was named director of Communications and Community Engagement, spent two years volunteering as the event’s social media coordinator and team leader. That time was granted to her by St. John’s in furtherance of its broader ministry and support for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
"Working alongside a group of creative communications professionals in the ELCA allowed me to test out new ideas, bring joy and humor into the creative content, and learn from others working in this niche industry,” Slabaugh said.
She led the communications team, which handled all social media content produced before, during, and after the Gathering. The event drew young people from throughout the country to be in one place for the first time in six years. The 2022 Gathering had been canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Slabaugh had an array of communication tools and a team of volunteers to work with. In addition to leading the social media team, she managed the ELCA Youth Gathering, Multicultural Youth Leadership Event (MYLE) and the tAble social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok) with more than 60,000 followers.
The work was a labor of love and a way to give back to the larger Lutheran church, Slabaugh said, allowing her to make connections and forge relationships that will endure.
“I think it is the best thing the ELCA does – these national events,” she said.
Slabaugh said she enjoyed being involved in a lay church event on a national stage, which provided a useful and hopeful perspective.
“It’s a good reminder that the church is not dying,” she said. “Youth are invested. It just looks different.”
The Gathering highlighted the “vastness of Lutherans,” she said.
Being part of the Gathering also reignited her creative spark, she said, inspiration that she brought back to Sacramento to use in her key roles at St. John’s.
“It was the culmination of these elements that ignited a creative spark and new confidence in me around communications that I brought back with me from New Orleans,” she said. “I believe this creative energy and passion will carry into my work here at St. John's!"
Slabaugh said she hopes to be part of the planning team for the 2027 ELCA National Youth Gathering, scheduled for June 28-July 2, 2027, in Minneapolis. For the time being, she is concentrating on her communications work at St. John’s and her community engagement responsibilities, emphasizing volunteer coordination and creating relationships with mission partners and community organizations.
