Every year, St. John's recognizes outstanding graduating high school seniors who all have one thing in common - exemplary commitment to the St. John's mission of living God's love in the world.
The St. John’s Scholarship program exists to assist qualified students, who are members of St. John’s, based on academic performance, church life, extracurricular activities, and financial need. Every year, graduating high school seniors are invited to apply for the scholarship. The William and Donna Morgan Award honors long-time St. John’s members, who dedicated years to education in Sacramento and served as long time supporters of the Scholarship fund. This award is presented to St. John’s graduating high school seniors, based on community service and the individual’s commitment to living God’s love in the world. Graduating high school seniors are nominated by members of the St. John’s community.

Makayla Holeman
is a graduate of St. Francis Catholic High School in Sacramento, CA and will be attending California State University, Sacramento this fall, pursuing a major in Communication Science. Makayla was baptized at St. John’s in the fall of 2006, and attended in her early years of high school as her mother, Rev. Katie Holeman, served on the St. John’s staff. Even as her family has transitioned to worship with the congregation her mother currently serves, Makayla continued to claim St. John’s as her home congregation in her many service opportunities with the greater Church. Makayla served on the Sierra Pacific Synod Youth Committee (SPSYC) for four years in High School, and served as the Youth Representative to the Sierra Pacific Synod Council. While on SPSYC and serving on Council, Makayla took on various leadership roles and served on numerous synod-wide committees. Additionally, Makayla regularly volunteers with Vacation Bible School and was a member of the Track & Field team at St. Francis. With a combination of years of service both inside and outside of the Church, along with a commitment to justice and care for all people, Makayla will be a recipient of the William and Donna Morgan Award.
A special thank you to this year’s scholarship recipients and to the committee members who faithfully discerned this year’s award recipients. May we all be inspired by these two young adults who courageously live God’s love in this world!
