Job Posting: Youth & Young Adult Ministry Leader
Position Title: Youth and Young Adult Ministry Leader – Part Time
Reports To: Associate Pastor and Director of Youth and Family Ministry
Hours: 20 hours/week to include Sundays 8:30 - 1:00 pm, including some holidays (set hours to be defined)
Compensation: $26,000/annually
Position Summary: This position defines and directs programming and faith development for high school age youth and young adults (through age 35). This person shall seek to foster Christian community through building relationships with youth and their families, and young adults, that strengthen their commitment to the church and their growth in faith in Jesus Christ, driven by the mission, vision and values of St. John’s.
Essential Functions:
- In collaboration with the Associate Pastor/Director of Youth & Family Ministries, help define and implement faithful and effective discipleship experiences for high school youth and young adults
- Engage and develop young leaders in building a faith community to lead approved events, activities and learning opportunities
- Connect with parents of high school youth about periodic programming, education or development of parent led groups or events to equip and support them to be the leader of their high school youth’s faith formation
- Organize, implement, and lead ministries and events for high school youth that build fellowship and explore faith, i.e. day trips, retreats, weekly youth group, mission trips, and ELCA youth gatherings
- Participate in and support all ages events including Vacation Bible School, Advent Festival, community meals, and service opportunities
- Assist in the seamless transition of St. John’s youth from Confirmation into St. John’s Youth programs.
- Create ministry opportunities that help high school youth and young adults identify their gifts and empowers them to use these gifts to serve within as well as outside the church walls through community-service opportunities, leadership opportunities, and peer ministry & support
- Assist/advocate with the pastoral staff to bridge between confirmation to high school, and high school graduation into young adulthood
- Provide outreach to high school youth and their families, and young adults, using Realm and other communication methods to directly hear feedback, communicate about programming, and connect to opportunities
- Identify and establish on-going connections beyond Sunday mornings and those we see regularly
- Collaborate with leaders around the changing culture of our high school and young adult ministry today, to prioritize and focus efforts to best meet the needs of these audiences
Other Responsibilities:
- Identify leadership and volunteer opportunities to align gifts and interests with needs, building a pipeline of leadership to engage in church events & committees, worship service, and synod level activity
- Identify volunteer opportunities for high school youth and young adults and communicate them to the Volunteer Coordinator, with understanding, attention and compliance to the Safety of Minors Policy, background check and training requirements
- Build a vibrant volunteer community of all ages to support programming, providing training to adult volunteers, including Order of St. John volunteers
- Coordinate fundraising activities that support and supplement the budget for this audience (for example, annual fundraising dinner)
- Participate in budget development and implementation for high school youth and young adult ministries
- Periodically serve in Sunday services as a First Glance speaker Minimum Qualifications, Abilities and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree, prior related experience, or seminary work preferred
- A vibrant Christian faith with 1) an appreciative understanding of the theological doctrines and commitments of the ELCA and 2) a commitment to diversity as a gift from God
- Ability to teach basic orthodox Christianity and scripture • Experience and desire to work with these audiences
- Ability to develop and implement ministry programs that engage and equip the faith of high school youth, their parents or caregivers, and young adults
- Ability to focus planning efforts, organize/manage around those efforts, and delegate and leverage volunteers effectively
- Interpersonal skills to facilitate the building of strong partnerships and teams
- Ability to recruit and work effectively with volunteers within St. John’s, area Lutheran churches, and the community at large
- Ability to identify, evaluate, and implement effective and innovative approaches for high school youth and young adult ministries, curriculum and programs
- Ability to understand and respect confidentiality and the ability to deal with issues and concerns directly with those involved, seek counsel from a supervisor as needed as outlined in St. John’s Personnel Manual
- A team-oriented self-starter with high performance standards who can prioritize effectively and balance time and work commitments
- Ability to understand, maintain and respect boundaries between adults and youth
Requirements:
- Completion of mandatory background screening and applicable online training(s)
- Able to work long hours at a computer
- Able to lift up to 25 pounds
- Valid CA driver’s license
