Over the years, the St. John’s community has sent forth hundreds of young adults to countless colleges, universities, trade schools, military deployments, job opportunities, and much more. This year, five St. John’s young adults will attend an ELCA college or university.
The Vision for Lutheran higher education states that, “At ELCA colleges and universities, students will discover through education in body, mind, and spirit that they are called and empowered to serve the neighbor so that all may flourish.”
How are these St. John’s young adults discovering this call? Through a diverse array of classes and academic experiences, enriching spiritual opportunities with fellow Lutherans and people of diverse faiths, and connecting deeply with their new communities across the country.
Below, we hear from Lucy Lindgren and Noah Jansen of St. Olaf College, Kai Sorensen and Sara Atwood of Pacific Lutheran University, and Tyler Chi of California Lutheran University.
Lucy Lindgren is a rising junior at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, studying Psychology and German. Originally drawn to St. Olaf for the beautiful midwest seasons, strong psychology department, and robust musical offerings for students, Lucy spent her first two years in Northfield embracing these strengths of St. Olaf, and many more.
For Lucy, a typical day at St. Olaf begins with a walk through the fall-colored leaves, or inches of deep snow, depending on the season, to either Boe Chapel for a morning service or a classroom for an 8:00 a.m. lecture. After a morning of both Psychology and German classes, Lucy spends her afternoon enjoying lunch from Stav Hall, studying, and rehearsing with her Choral ensemble. She wraps up her day with club gatherings, more studying, and time with friends.
In the heart of the Midwest, St. Olaf’s Lutheran identity is palpable in every part of the academic and student life on campus. Lucy shares, “St. Olaf isn’t bashful about being Lutheran, and topics of faith are openly discussed in and out of the classroom. I appreciate that I don’t have to be apologetic for my faith when in a biology class, and can animatedly discuss academics while at church. I love the academic and spiritual breadth that each day has - it feels like every part of me is being fed.”

In a similar season-filled climate, Sara Atwood and Kai Sorensen both enter their sophomore years at Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) in Tacoma, Washington. Sara is double majoring in criminal justice and social work, with a minor in psychology, and is a member of the International Honors program. Kai is studying business, with an accounting concentration, is also a member of the International Honors program, and a student-athlete on the cross country and track teams.
As a double major and member of the honors program, Sara’s typical day at PLU involves diverse classes such as “work, labor, and capitalism” or “clinical psychology”, a shift working at the Center for Student Success office, intramural badminton games, time with friends, and of course, studying.
As a student-athlete, Kai’s day involves classes, practice and workouts, many trips to the dining haul to re-fuel, and time with friends. Kai was initially drawn to PLU for the perfect combination of strong academics and athletics, giving him the opportunity to earn an MBA in five years, be a part of the honors program, and compete as a college athlete. As a Pastor’s kid, the strong ties to the ELCA were an important addition to life at PLU.
“Everywhere I go, I try to live God's love in the world, and my college experience has been full of experiences where I got to do just that. The fellowship and connection that I've found on this campus is extensive, and getting to meet lots of other people with the same beliefs is such an amazing thing. I've been fortunate enough to work with the Tacoma chapter of Habitat for Humanity through PLU, and there are so many other volunteer opportunities that I have access to here because PLU truly values serving all of God's children,” Kai shares.
Similarly, Sara was drawn to PLU for the strong Lutheran connections that align closely with her values.
“My faith and spirituality is an important part of my identity, which means that at times it influences how I may move through my life. It was really important for me to choose a small university, where I could make connections with my professors, peers, faculty, and community. Small universities are often Christian, and it was important to me that my college would hold similar values to me. I would not have gone somewhere that didn’t believe in loving all of God’s children equally, or that did not want to do the work to ensure all of God’s children and creations were treated with equity, kindness, and respect,” writes Sara.
While these three are well into their college experience, the St. John’s community recently said farewell to two young men who will attend ELCA colleges this fall.
Tyler Chi will attend California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, Calif., studying biology with a pre-med track. Cal Lutheran’s academic, scholarship, and extracurricular opportunities drew Tyler to attend, along with suggestions from friends and family. As he embarks this week, Tyler is looking forward to the Christian community and personable relationships that this small liberal arts college is sure to offer.
“I chose the school because the campus felt inviting and welcoming, just like how St. John’s feels. I am a generational Lutheran; my family has attended St. John’s for decades and it feels like home to us. Suggestions from my family, my peers, and the Espegren family, had assured me that Cal Lutheran was the right choice for me,” writes Chi.
When Tyler graduates from Cal Lutheran, he hopes to obtain “a better understanding of myself, my faith, the world around me, and how to “live God’s love in the world.”
Noah Jansen will join Lucy Lindgren at St. Olaf College this fall, with plans to pursue a degree in physics.
We wish not only these five, but all other young adults beginning the school year this fall, a spiritually enlightening, academically rigorous, and joyful school year!
