The St. John’s Confirmation Wall - one of the eye-catching and historically-significant hallways congregants find themselves gazing at time and time again. With nearly every Confirmation class photo from the previous 100 years, this hallway of photographs showcases the thousands of young people whose faith has been shaped by the community of St. John’s and witness of the Lutheran church.
Over the years, the Confirmation curriculum and teaching style has changed drastically. We sat down with longtime member Mike Knoles, who was confirmed at St. John’s in 1955, and new St. John’s member Enzo Martinez-Vaughan, who was confirmed at St. John’s a few weeks back in 2024, to discuss how Confirmation has evolved over the past nearly 70 years, and how it’s remained the same.
“It’s a little difficult to remember experiences over seventy years ago, let alone any details. I do remember riding my bike most Saturday mornings from our home in Curtis Park to St. Johns for Confirmation classes. There were over 25 members in that class held under direction of Pastor Romeis. There were open discussions, questions, and memorizations of scriptures. These classes were held in the basement of what is now Oehler Hall,” writes Knoles.
Representing our current approach to Confirmation, Martinez-Vaughan writes, “For the year I have been in Confirmation I have enjoyed it. I got to learn so much about common, everyday questions that don't have a clear answer. Another thing I liked about this class was the information we learned usually gave us the resources to form our own beliefs about a question, instead of just telling us one answer. I also enjoyed meeting and introducing myself to many other kids my age in the class. The few weeks we joined with Luminaria were also very impactful on me as I heard about some beliefs, opinions, and stories from adults in the church. This part of confirmation was very informative."
One significant change in the St. John’s Confirmation class over the past 70 years is the culmination of the program. Knoles shares, “I believe we were required to repeat a small scripture verse during our Confirmation Service.” Whereas, Martinez-Vaughan writes, ”Confirmation culminated in a 2-day ceremony on the weekend. To be confirmed, we just needed to want to affirm our baptism and do a faith statement. While most were written speeches, one confirmand recorded a dance as her faith statement. This was meant to represent our passion and its connection to Jesus. I greatly enjoyed writing mine.”
“After all these years, I find my faith continuing to be directed by the things taught and learned in those Confirmation classes at St. John,” Knoles concludes.
“I learned a lot about Christianity in confirmation. I took away that there are many misconceptions or varying beliefs about Christianity and I should inform myself and make my own opinions. I also learned a lot and met many kids my age at the church and had a fun time with all of them,” shares Martinez-Vaughan.
While the style of teaching and number of youth may change year to year, one element remains true. The Confirmation program at St. John’s cultivates friendships, accompanies young people exploring their faith, and encourages the next generation to carry on the St. John’s mission of Living God’s Love in the World.
