Dear St. John’s Community,
I write to you today to share that I have accepted the call as the Director for Evangelical Mission (DEM) and Assistant to the Bishop in the Sierra Pacific Synod. I will begin this position June 3, 2024 and my last day at St. John’s will be Sunday, May 19th.
When Bishop Jeff Johnson invited me to apply for the position, it resonated with a years’ long discernment about serving in the role of DEM should a position open in a synod where I felt called to serve. I am excited about this opportunity to share my gifts and experiences in the Sierra Pacific Synod and with the wider church. I am also eager to work with our congregations, including St. John’s, in my capacity as DEM, to develop strategies for a larger Lutheran witness.
Even so, I find it hard to end my time as one of your pastors. I am grateful to the people of St. John’s, who have welcomed and loved Zayd and me these last 5 years. We have been greatly blessed by this community and have formed many meaningful relationships that we will carry with us.
Over the next three weeks, I will work with my fellow directors and key leaders to ensure as smooth a transition as possible, passing along information and a status report of my ministries so they may continue beyond my departure. There will be time for proper goodbyes and I welcome you to reach out to me over the next few weeks.
Grace and Peace,
Pr. Amy Kienzle
With Pastor Amy Kienzle's announcement that she will be leaving her call at St. John's, please join me in thanking her for her service with us. We will miss her inspired preaching, passionate service to those in need, and wide evangelical welcome. We give thanks to God, and to Pastor Amy, for five wonderful years of pastoral leadership in very challenging times. Thank you, Pastor Amy! We will celebrate her many gifts and contributions over the next month - more details on a final "Farewell & Godspeed" celebration for Pastor Amy to follow.
My sadness that Pastor Amy is leaving her role at St. John's is tempered by the fact that she will not be moving away from Sacramento as she starts her new call in the Sierra Pacific Synod Bishop's Office. I believe the Sierra Pacific Synod made a very wise choice in their decision to call Pastor Amy into leadership. This will be a wonderful opportunity for her, and for St. John's to be more connected with our Synod.
Of course, this means that change is upon us here at St. John's. Our Congregational Council is packed with excellent leaders who are working with me, and the other directors of St. John's, to discern the best way forward for us in terms of pastoral and strategic leadership. Even though St. John's has been in existence over 150 years, we are always changing and evolving, and I am confident we will be able to meet this moment faithfully.
In the meantime, please join me over these next weeks as we thank Pastor Amy for all the good work she has done here.
Sincerely,
Pr. Frank Espegren
