Stewardship!
In early Greek writings the word stewardship meant management of one’s estate and it was directly connected to responsibility, to accountability, to caring for those who lived on the estate…all concepts that exist at the core of our ethics and values and commitment to serving and helping others.
Does that sound familiar? St. John’s was founded on those concepts so long ago, a humble beginning for a congregation that would many years later adopt as its core value the dedication to do God’s work with grace, in trust, by faith, through action.
Among the number of reasons Bea and I joined St. John’s more than 20 years ago was its members’ faithfulness to stewardship, as well as what the congregation was doing in the community. And how it was fulfilling its responsibilities to not only grow but to extend its benevolence each year. It’s no surprise that St. John’s is the number one contributor to the Synod.
Year after year, as followers and leaders in fund-raising campaigns, on the council and committees, and for memorial celebrations, we witnessed the congregation respond gracefully to the church’s needs repeatedly; in good times and not-so-good times.
Bea, who passed away almost four years ago, and I had deeply religious parents, Baptist on her side and Catholic on mine, who taught us about the joys of a generous spirit. They lived by the words in the book of good news: “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” And they responded in a sacrificial spirit and as cheerful givers. We always tried to be faithful to their teachings.
From the beginning, we knew St. John’s was more than just a church home. It is a place of purpose, a place of promise, a place that is inwardly strong and outwardly focused. In our sanctuary, grace, peace, tolerance, generosity, forgiveness, reconciliation, hope, energy, creativity, the gifts of God, and the bonds and causes that bring us together, can be found. And beyond our walls, staff and members are dedicated to bringing light to those who are living in the darkness of despair, at home and abroad.
The St. John’s we joined remains a center of care and compassion in the middle of Sacramento, a welcoming home where God’s love is lived in the world, where Jesus’ words are reflected in actions, and where there is a fire fueled by the Holy Spirit.
St. John's is a vibrant, urban church centered in enthusiastic and inspirational worship, grace-filled service and rich opportunities for spiritual growth.
St. John's is a Reconciling in Christ Church of the Sierra Pacific Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
