The Sierra Pacific Synod is home to around 180 worshiping communities who often share a common goal; accompanying young people in their faith formation as influential, empowered, and equipped members of the Church. Many churches facilitate these formation opportunities through Sunday School, youth group, and summer trips, but here at St. John’s, the Sierra Pacific Synod Youth Committee (SPSYC) serves as a pillar for youth to explore their faith through leadership development with other Sierra Pacific Synod youth.
SPSYC is a youth-led, adult-assisted committee of up to 27 high schoolers from throughout the Sierra Pacific Synod elected to serve and come together to host retreats for other youth every year. Members of SPSYC are intended to represent the diversity and vastness of this Synod, serving as voting members at the annual Synod Assembly and helping lead various synodical events.
For over 15 years, youth in grades 3 - 12 from St. John’s have attended weekend retreats led by SPSYC. As elementary and middle schoolers attend the retreats, they become inspired by the high school leaders and often run for a position on the committee. Dozens of high school youth from St. John’s have served on SPSYC since its inception, and five St. John’s youth currently serve on the committee. Mia Hill, Chloe Pop, Makayla Holemen, Bella Manley, and Maggie Oehmke are members of this year’s SPSYC team.
One of the first St. John’s high schoolers to join SPSYC was Christina Espegren. Christina served on SPSYC from 2007-2009, serving as President of the team in her final year.
“SPSYC was the most important community for my faith formation during my high school years - when you are teaching others you learn so much and take a closer look at your own understanding of faith and scripture. SPSYC was the first opportunity I had to explore leadership skills like group facilitation, retreat/event planning, and professional communication,” shared Christina.
Since Christina’s time on SPSYC, the committee has evolved and grown, with 15 current members from half a dozen different churches across the synod. The five St. John’s high schoolers who currently serve on SPSYC continue to be enriched by the leadership opportunities and freedom to explore their faith amongst peers that become close friends.
“SPSYC has helped me understand my own faith a lot more. I always knew that I believed in God, but wasn’t sure how it fit into my life. SPSYC has helped me to know that God is always with me no matter what, which has inspired me to help other youth feel this as well.” shares Makayla Holemen.
In addition to the opportunity to develop their faith, SPSYC provides an enriching and tight-knit community for high school students.
“My favorite memory from SPSYC is the retreats that we go on at Mt. Cross. They’re really fun and really help connect us as a community, since we’re all working together to give people the best time that we can and we’re all working toward a common goal. They really showcase the community and family that SPSYC forms within their members,” shares Maggie Oehmke.
“My favorite memory from SPSYC was the planning retreat we had in October; we all got super close during that time, hanging out and drinking lots of hot cocoa,” writes Mia Hill.
St. John’s continues to faithfully support the Sierra Pacific Synod Youth Committee, and we encourage our elementary and middle school youth to attend the retreats the committee hosts. We strongly believe in the power of peer ministry and look forward to supporting the legacy of youth on SPSYC deeply rooted in the St. John’s community.
