Every year, St. John's recognizes outstanding graduating high school seniors who all have one thing in common - exemplary commitment to the St. John's mission of living God's love in the world.
The St. John’s Scholarship program exists to assist qualified students, who are members of St. John’s, based on academic performance, church life, extracurricular activities, and financial need. The William and Donna Morgan Award honors long-time St. John’s members, who dedicated years to education in Sacramento and served as long time supporters of the Scholarship fund. This award is presented to two of St. John’s graduating high school seniors, based on community service at the individual’s commitment to living God’s love in the world.
This year, Teaghan Brostrom and Tyler Chi are the recipients of the $3,000 St. John’s Scholarship, and Noah Jansen and Teaghan Brostrom are the recipients of the William and Donna Morgan Award.
Teaghan Brostom is a graduate of St. Francis Catholic High School in Sacramento, CA and will be attending Syracuse University this fall, pursuing a double major in broadcast digital journalism and international relations. Especially over the last four years, Teaghan developed creative leadership skills, particularly as a Peer Minister and Assisting Minister here at St. John’s, as the President of the Sierra Pacific Synod Youth Committee (SPSYC), as a member of the ELCA Youth Core Leadership Team, and as a key leader for her school news show, Troubie TV. A combination of her academic excellence, involvement in diverse extracurriculars, and embodiment of the St. John’s mission, Teaghan will receive both the St. John’s Scholarship and the William and Donna Morgan Award.
Tyler Chi is a graduate of Laguna Creek High School in Elk Grove, CA and will be attending California Lutheran University this fall, pursuing pre-med with the intention of becoming a cardiologist. With deep values of serving others, Tyler has remained active in leadership roles both at St. John’s and with his school. Tyler served as an Arch Acolyte, training and raising up younger acolytes, helped serve Thanksgiving Meals to our unhoused neighbors, and has been a key member of Laguna Creek’s Green Energy Technology Academy (GETA) and the wrestling team. While balancing this, Tyler academically excelled and explored a diverse array of STEM classes to develop his passion for science. With the culmination of his work ethic, commitment to service, and hard work in the classroom, Tyler will receive the St. John’s Scholarship this year.
Noah Jansen is a graduate of Del Oro High School in Loomis, CA and will be attending St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN this fall, pursuing a degree in physics. Since seventh grade, Noah has remained an active leader here at St. John’s. Noah served as a Master Acolyte, Peer Minister and Assisting Minister, and served on the Sierra Pacific Synod Youth Committee (SPSYC). Noah’s commitment to living God’s love in the world is expressed through his relationships with others, accompanying siblings in Christ both in church and out in the world. Noah was a member of both the football and tennis team in high school and shared an authentic sense of care and compassion with his teammates. Noah’s deep spiritual life expressed in all aspects of his life led him to be a recipient of the William and Donna Morgan Award.
A special thank you to this year’s scholarship recipients, other applicants, and to the committee members who faithfully discerned this year’s award recipients. May we all be inspired by these three young adults who courageously live God’s love in this world!
