Dear People of St. John’s,
As you may know, the Sierra Pacific Synod currently has an interim bishop, Claire Burkat, whose contract ends October 31, 2023. The synod will elect a new bishop at its assembly September 15-17, 2023. As part of the election process, the synod asked each conference to meet this past spring to identify people with gifts to serve as our next bishop. After individuals were named from each conference, they were given time to discern moving forward as a pre-nominee for bishop. My name was lifted up by the Capitol Valley Conference, and through deep discernment, I decided to move forward in the pre-nominee process for bishop. Thus, I will be one of the pre-nominees whose names and biographical information will be posted on the synod website August 1st.
Late last year in anticipation of the pre-nomination process, Pastor Frank asked me to consider letting him put my name forward at our conference gathering in June. I told him I would pray about it and let him know by early February. Truthfully, it has been something I have wondered about over the 16 years of my professional ministry, as other trusted colleagues have pointed out gifts in me that they would like to see in a bishop. So, I felt I had to consider this seriously. I began a time of prayer and discernment that is ongoing and has included talking to my partner Zayd, other trusted colleagues and friends, as well as current and former bishops. What I can say with some certainty is that I do feel called to be open to be a pre-nominee and engage in this process.
This means that when the list of names goes up on the synod website August 1, 2023, my name will be there. At the beginning of the assembly the list will come down from the website, so that we can have a true ecclesial ballot. There are up to five ballots over the three-day assembly. On the first ballot any ordained Minister of Word and Sacrament (pastor) of the ELCA may be nominated; not just those on the list of pre-nominees. On subsequent ballots, votes are cast from among the names on the previous ballot. The top seven candidates after the second ballot will have a chance to speak briefly before the third ballot. When the candidates are down to three, each will respond to questions and have more time to speak about their vision and priorities for the synod. A final ballot is cast on Sunday, September 17, after which one person will be the bishop-elect.
During this time of discernment and deliberation, I welcome your prayers for me, the other pre-nominees, and the synod as we move forward together. St. John's will have eight voting members in addition to our three pastors participating in the work of the assembly. Pray for them as well. They will have their own prayer and discernment to do over the election and the other business at hand in September.
Grace and Peace,
Rev. Amy Kienzle
A few words from Senior Pastor, Rev. Frank Espegren:
For some time, I have witnessed Pastor Amy’s gracious leadership, innovative ministry ideas, and hope for the future of this church. I strongly encouraged her to discern putting her name forward as a pre-nominee candidate for bishop, and have supported her in this discernment for the last couple of months. I believe Pastor Amy is a gift to our church and to our synod, and look forward to walking alongside her in this bishop election process. I encourage your prayers and support for not only Pastor Amy, but for the entire Sierra Pacific Synod in these coming weeks.
