Grace and peace to you this day from God our loving parent and from the one whose words and person lead to eternal life, Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, Amen.
I write to you today to share that after serving as your Senior Pastor for the past 12 years and as a Pastor at St. John’s Lutheran Church for the past 17 years, I will retire from my role as Senior Pastor on my 65th birthday,
September 7, 2025.
As some of you may know, I am a lifelong Sacramentan with deep roots in the St. John’s community. I attended the youth-led St. John’s Haunted House during Halloween season in the mid 1970s as a High Schooler, worked with Pastor David Peters from 1996-97 during my first year in Seminary as St. John’s was my Teaching Parish, and eventually accepted a call as Associate Pastor in 2007 and Senior Pastor in 2012. Over the past 30 years, the community of St. John’s Lutheran Church has shaped the person and Pastor I am today. These calls with St. John’s have blessed my life; serving as one of your Pastors continues to be my greatest vocational call.
Over the past year, it became clear to me that with the various transitions and changes afoot here at St. John’s, a plan should be implemented for my tenure as St. John’s Senior Pastor to come to a close. I share my retirement with you one year in advance with the hope of a smooth, spirit-filled transition. With a year-long notice, the St. John’s Church Council is able to continue transition work and begin the process of calling a new Senior Pastor while I am still serving. This allows for a shorter transition time with an Interim Senior Pastor. I will not be involved in the call process or discernment work, but am confident that the leadership of St. John’s will manage the transition over the next year exceptionally well.
You may have noticed I was not in worship yesterday, and will not be in worship this coming Sunday as I am away on a family vacation. However, the St. John’s Church Council leadership will host a Congregation Matters Meeting this Sunday, September 15 at 10:15 a.m. to discuss their plan around my retirement. I encourage you to attend this meeting to hear about the faithful leadership of this congregation and their plans for a Call Process for a new Senior Pastor.
Rhonda and I love this community of faith; we believe in the mission of Living God’s Love in the World and will miss worshiping, serving, and laughing alongside each of you. Fortunately, we will have many opportunities to say goodbye in meaningful ways over the next year. I look forward to sharing more with you upon my return on Sunday, September 22.
In Christ,
Frank Espegren
