Youth and Family Ministries is part of Congregational Life at St. John's. It provides programs and events for families at every stage - nursery care and Sunday School classes, First Communion, Confirmation, youth group and family trips. This area of our ministries also focuses on small groups for different neighborhoods and interest groups.

Children's Ministry

At St. John's, Children's Ministry is available from birth through 6th grade. It incorporates the nursery during worship, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Each year, children are eligible for an elementary school retreat to Mount Cross.

Children's & Youth Choir

St. John’s children’s music program is fully integrated into the Christian education program. All children can participate in music in small groups determined by age. They learn music from a wide range of sources, including the music of the liturgy and familiar hymns sung in worship.

Designed for 7th and 8th graders, Confirmation is a two-year program that enables young people to grow in their Christian faith as they journey toward a time when they can say “yes” to God and the church. Students are required to attend Shalom Camp at Mount Cross during one summer.

The Order of St. John

Youth are invited to use their gifts and talents to serve at the altar of God by serving as acolytes in the Order of St. John. The Order of St. John is organized into teams. Working closely with each acolyte team is a mentor—an adult who serves as the team’s trainer and is the liaison with the pastors on Sundays.

Youth Group

After confirmation, students move on to our high school youth group. The youth group meets weekly for fellowship through discussions or fun acitivities. Every summer the youth group embarks on a service trip, which can include the National Youth Gathering or the Western States Youth Gathering.

Family Ministry

St. John's Family Ministry spans all ages. Our small groups look to bring members with similar interests together, such as our Elk Grove Dinner Groups. We also bring families together multiple times a year through our Vine to Chalice series and our camping trips and picnics. All are welcome to any Family Ministry event.

August 27, 2017

We invite all to bring their bags, backpacks, briefcases and more to church on Sunday, August 27. During all three worship services, we will bless these bags for the coming year. This is a yearly traditional at St. John's as we enter our programmatic year and our children and youth head back to school.

Pastor Jon Haug

"As a father of two young kids I get the challenges and joys of parenting today. I want my children to grow up knowing that God loves them for who they are, as they are, and that Jesus loved them all the way to the cross. I strive to have a youth and family program that teaches that and meets parents and youth where they are in their walks of faith. So join us for Sunday school each week at 10:15am; put your 2nd grader into a 1st Communion class; have your 7th or 8th grader join our special education and Confirmation class, or have your teen join in our youth group. And as a parent, get coffee with me or another parent to share the joys and burdens of this particular chapter of life. We are here for you whether you are a single parent home or a two parent home, whether you are grandparents raising kids or any other of the multifaceted ways that we raise young people today.  And if you are a youth struggling with your faith and life, you will find a home here with other struggling, honest teens trying to live God's love in the world the best we can. Can't wait to see you here!"

Begins Sunday, September 17

Sunday School returns to St. John's on Sunday, September 17. Children from age three through 6th grade can participate in Sunday School. These classes take place during our Education Hour from 10:15 - 11:15 am on Sundays.

On Sunday, September 3, there will be a one room Sunday School and a parent meeting to go over the paperwork and registration required for children to be enrolled in Sunday. School. This will take place during the Education Hour from 10:15 - 11:15 am. If you cannot make this meeting, you can contact Sarah Jessop Street for information!

For most of our children and youth retreats and trips, scholarships are available for families. Individuals are invited to contact Pastor Jon to talk about scholarship options to make sure all youth are able to participate in the many great opportunities we have available. In addition to these, two academic scholarships are also available and overseen by the Scholarship Committee.
